UNTITLED SOUND OBJECTS
Pe Lang + Zimoun
may 07 – june 07 2007
White noise containing virtually all frequency ranges with constant amplitude is transferred to metal plates by transducers in order to
find out the individual resonance properties of the plates. Those properties are the basis for the sound composition.
White noise is transmitted to the individual metal plates as acoustic impulse. The plates enhance its volume so that it becomes distinctly audible. The acoustic signals are recorded by a microphone and then re-transmitted to the same metal plate by the transducer. This procedure is repeated several times for each plate. As each of the plates is particularly receptive to certain frequencies, i.e. certain frequencies are particularly enhanced by the individual resonance property of the plate, the individual sound of each plate becomes more distinct with each repetition of the acoustic signal transmission. This allows to figure out the individual resonance of each metal plate, which is the basis for the composition, whereas the composition is arranged in a way that the combined sound of the installation is in constant development, and therefore no repetitions occur during the entire exposition.
Zimoun
zimoun, 1977, is autodidact and lives in berne. since 2000 he works as a sound, visual and acoustic artist.
zimoun's works range from visual arts to installations, performance, music, compositions and areas related to all of the above. he focusses on research of space, structure, form and empty space, but also on the cautious handling of materials, working with day-to-day phenomena and occurrences. at the end of 2003 zimoun founded the network, label and since august 2005 also exhibition space for sound art leerraum.ch
radio monk: «zimoun is best compared to a watchmaker of a self-reproducing time constructing his own gauging station».
Pe Lang
pe lang is skilled electrican and works since 1997 as artist and programmer in zurich. in 2005 he got the award «sitemapping/mediaprojects» for the development of a software for live visuals. pe lang is involved in leerraum.ch and he organised in 2005 a couple of live performances in unusual environments. (performances with steinbruchel, bloom, longmo, zimoun, pe lang,...) one of the main points of the work of pe lang is the research of material and sound. so he started to work a long time ago with trough materials generated sounds. since 2004 pe lang works together with zimoun on theyr common project «untitled sound objects».
